Abstract

The continuous declining response rate in the surveys conducted by the National Institute of Statistics is countered, in the first instance, with the application of a reminder strategy. But is this really the winning strategy? What is behind the sometimes-frantic rush to send a reminder?

What is the institute doing to optimise this path?

What other elements can interact to support the improvement of the response rate?

The aim of the paper is precisely to answer these questions by comparing the experiences of the major business surveys, i.e. the Permanent Censuses of Economic Units.
